| What determines a person's era with a particular company's products? I used to think my era in my early 20's with RF was with the Punch 45, 75 & 150 were in prominence. That was around 1989-1992. Then in my early thirties I really enjoyed the 1997-1998 series particularly the punch 250.1 power. I always thought the best of RF was in the late 80's through late 90's. Then the mini power series came out in 2007 and it my mind is the best of the bunch. Does age determine when a person enjoys car audio products from a particular company at a particular time? Or does maturity and appreciation for good quality determines a person's favorite era for products. Does age even matter in this equation? |

Yes, age & maturity has much to do with it IMO. Unlike most, I have not had to have the newest gear that has come out besides upgrading from RF components to RF Fanatic coaxials from 2000 in 2003 & Stinger car audio batteries in 2005. My newest upgrade has been Sirius radio which my neighbors gave me & a year subscription for my 40th birthday in July. My system has really come to life in clarity & loudness with the clear satellite signal and I would venture to say that I finally feel complete now with my sound the way it should be.
Another thing is for the newer generation of kids now it is all about the bass & SPL with class D amps and less with class A/B SQ amps..again IMO. I am all for SPL & bass, but desire a good balance of SQ & SPL and always have..but more at my present age. The high score on the meter is the goal now instead of a great sounding, crowd pleasing musical sound system. I have heard more interest lately on the different car audio forums of getting back to the true old school way of a great balance of SQ/SPL..which I think is good.

| I think once you are bitten by the car audio bug, it has you for life. My first system was built around a Fosgate PR250 with the matching EQ, a pair of ADS L200C and a pair of JBL L16 8" woofers in a ported box. My source unit at the time was a Pioneer KPH88 cassette deck/pre-amp.Time -1978-79. Considering the day, the system hauled ass! I have been hooked every since... |

my preference for RF products is the Power Elite series amps and now the power mini and new power speakers. I dont really like the style of the old ones, so thats what determines my era in the products
and ever since the MTX amp and woofer as my first sound system i've been an RF person. |
T20001bd, 2x T212D4, T400-2, Focal 6x9, 2x T600-2, 2x T1652-s, Kenwood DVD and Nav, all RF wire and accessories. 360.2 coming soon!!! |

Good to see you Bill. I am glad the Pres of ROFO is posting on his forum.

I wanted to address the statement "considering the day". I am aware that car audio has come a long way with better equipment being produced from some high end companies..(taking it lightly with some cheaper stuff being made overseas), but I tend to hear this statement.. especially concerning the old school being able to keep up with systems today. I bet your old set up could still impress to this day.
I know (with others telling me) that my system with power & signaling coming from the RF 1989 era & CV sub, RF speakers coming from the 1999-2000 era..I can still impress & keep up if not surpass with the majority of today's combo SQ/SPL systems.
Many think they have to have the newest & most up-to-date gear to stay ahead of the game..which I can see if you are completely concerned with pure SPL & scoring high on the meter. But for a great sounding, crowd pleasing combo SQ/SPL system, sometimes the old works just as good if not better than the newest IMO.

| It's been a struggle for me because I really loved the Punch 45, 75, 150, Punch 250.1 Power, T10001BD, etc. However, these new Power mini's really have me hooked. I never thought at the age of 40 that I would still be so excited about car audio systems as I was when I was 20 but that is the case. Like Bill said once you start you are hooked. Even back then I was still concerned about using crossovers and clarity and a little thump at the end. Now sq comes first but the kid in me likes to make my front mirrors move sometimes. |

Same here at 40 Mike, but somewhat more subdued due to more responsibilities in life at a older age. Drive my car & listen to my system occasionally (ride is garage kept & drive normal stock SUV for daily). Enter sound off competitions every so often..about 4 to 5x a yr. Maybe that's one of the reasons I have kept my current vintage old school to date.

I have a good mix of both SQ & SPL..depends on the music. Can be more SQ at times with some bass or a pure mean bass SPL sound machine which I still like.

Guys- I hate to say, but I can see 50 in my windshield. Although a couple years off, I have been playing with car audio as a hobby and an career for 30+ years.
The systems of the past are good, but technology has improved. Amplifiers are more efficient, the ability to get BIG power is easier and more affordable. LOTS of great product from the past, 650's, BD1000's, BD1500's, Power Elite, etc. The new POWER mini's are building an impressive legacy.
I still listen loud. Period. There is NOTHING like a big system, with big cubic inch power and big cubic inch drivers. IMO It has to sound good AND play loud! |

I understand where you are coming from Bill. I guess I am making a statement by still running the vintage and old school gear & have for 20 years. I am still one of the few & proud to rep RF Punch amps from the series that began it all for them into the mainstream car audio scene to be respected & feared.

| Being 40 years old with 2 15's in the back wouldn't be very mature to me. However 1 RF 12 T2 in the back with the superenclosure tuned to 40 hz I can live with. Even better with the right power T1500-1BD, my 1 12 can easily out thump average 15's if I ever need it to. :) Otherwise the newer technology gives me an excellent blend of SQ and SPL. |

I have to disagree with the maturity statement, i'm 40 and i love riding with 4 18's and 16kw on lows alone... there is something to be said about pulling up next to the punk kid with his audiobahn sticker or kicker banner... hittin the gain knob.. and watching HIS rearview mirror drop in his lap...

I was at a sound off competition last Sat & listened inside to 4 15" powered by about 16kw. The pressure & experience is what I needed to keep me hype in the car audio bass scene! |
